What is a marketing strategy? 


A marketing strategy is a long-term plan for achieving your goals by understanding the requirements of your customers and using this knowledge to create relevant content that puts your product in front of them and gives your business an advantage over your competitors. A marketing strategy is absolutely essential for results. You need to plan it out in order to get results. It should set out your business goals, who your customers are, and how you will reach them. 


You need a marketing strategy to give you something concrete to work from and keep you focused and on track to deliver positive results. You might have thought up some great marketing tactics, but getting them down in writing and defining your strategy in a document commits you to it and gives you a reference point to come back to. It could also be used to help any other people involved in your marketing activity to help them understand your audience and ultimately deliver a successful marketing strategy.


Your marketing strategy should provide a general direction but not specific details; your content needs to be tailored for your target audience and each post - whether a blog, social media post, or a targeted ad - should achieve this in different ways.

When creating your strategy you need to keep in mind the 7 p’s of marketing; 


  • Product: how you meet the needs of the customer 
  • Price: how much the customer is willing to pay for your product 
  • Promotion: what channels you choose to use to tell the customer about your product 
  • Place: where you sell the product
  • People: the people who help sell your product to the customer 
  • Packaging: how you present the product or service to your customers 
  • Process: how the product is delivered to customers 


Once you have considered all these aspects and have a solution for all of them, you’re already well on the way to finalising your marketing strategy - you just need to put it all together in an organised document. you should however keep the 7 p's in mind throughout the entire process when you're creating your marketing strategy.


A marketing strategy helps to get your product or service in front of your audience. Part of this means you need to define your marketing mix - so you need to decide how you’re going to reach your audience and which media you’re going to use. This should include different types of marketing and could include online presence with your websites, through social media presence and regular interaction across your platforms, or traditional media through print in newspapers and posters. 


Developing product plans is essential for your marketing strategy. Once you understand your target customers, you can ensure your product is suitable for them and that your marketing strategy is tailored for this audience. Your customers are looking for what they need, so identifying the benefits of your product is the way to bring them in. Once they know how well your product works, and how it is going to serve those needs, they’re going to buy into your business.

Set objectives; this will help you measure the success of your marketing strategy, and give you something to aim for. Decide how much your budget will be for your strategy, and how many hits and sales you want to see, whether that's a number or an increase. 


You’ll also need to clearly lay out what you’re offering to your customer, keeping it engaging and succinct to keep your audience drawn in. What you're doing is creating a marketing plan, which will allow you to keep on top of your competitors and ensure you're creating the best results for yourself, and create a successful marketing strategy. Creating a marketing strategy is not something you want to rush, as you need to know what your specific marketing tactics will be to hit your target audience and connect with your customers, which you might do through digital marketing channels or through social media marketing. 


Once you have your marketing strategy in place you can start to put it into action. This is essentially your overall game plan for reaching your customers, so it's vitally important that the marketing strategy for your business is well thought through and will get you the marketing ROI that you are aiming to achieve.

Once your marketing strategy is in place, you can begin to put out content and adverts to draw your customers in and keep them engaged. When you start doing this you need to make sure what you're putting out is relevent and consisitent to get the attention of your customers and keep them focused and interested in your product.

But this isn't the end, as you'll constantly need to keep up to date with trends and cycles to keep your content up to date, and keep your customers engaged and interested.

A buyer persona is a typical representations of the businesses ideal customer, based upon market research as well as looking in-depth at your existing customer base. When creating a buyer persona, it is not as simple as describing who they are, you use it to generate insight’s into their buyer habits and journey which can lead to a progressive sales strategy. This then enables you to refine what type of content you need to create in order to engagement this type of user the most. Ultimately, it can help to build those all important rapports needed between the client and the business; addressing this allows you to personalise the service you provide to them. Building your buyer persona To build you buyer persona, you need to address who you are trying to target. To establish this, you need to ask yourself the following questions: Age/Gender- For example, if you wanted to target Generation Y these group of people are classed as millennials born between 1981-1996. This might affect the language you use in your copywriting and content creation Location - Country or City based? This can reveal more about their personality Status - What is their current role; manager, trainee? What area do they specalise in? Are they affluent? Income - How much are they willing to spend of your products or service? Level of education - This can help again with how you choose to deliver your advertising Personality - are they an introvert or an extrovert? What are their beliefs and vales? Goals - What do they want from you? Professional and personal goals Frustrations and Barriers - How can you offer the best solution so they can overcome the obstacles they may be facing within their career development, business management or personal struggles? Information sources - What are the external influences affecting your buyer? Do they have a preferred blog, social platform or search engine? Who do they aspire to be like, or look up to for knowledge?
