How to create buyer personas and improve your customer targeting

A buyer persona is a typical representations of the businesses ideal customer, based upon market research as well as looking in-depth at your existing customer base. When creating a buyer persona, it is not as simple as describing who they are,  you use it to generate insight’s into their buyer habits and journey which can lead to a progressive sales strategy.


This then enables you to refine what type of content you need to create in order to engagement this type of user the most. Ultimately, it can help to build those all important rapports needed between the client and the business; addressing this allows you to personalise the service you provide to them.   



Building your buyer persona


To build you buyer persona, you need to address who you are trying to target. To establish this, you need to ask yourself the following questions:


  • Age/Gender- For example, if you wanted to target Generation Y these group of people are classed as millennials born between 1981-1996. This might affect the language you use in your copywriting and content creation


  • Location - Country or City based? This can reveal more about their personality


  • Status - What is their current role; manager, trainee? What area do they specalise in? Are they affluent? 


  • Income - How much are they willing to spend of your products or service?


  • Level of education - This can help again with how you choose to deliver your advertising 


  • Personality - are they an introvert or an extrovert? What are their beliefs and vales? 


  • Goals - What do they want from you? Professional and personal goals


  • Frustrations and Barriers - How can you offer the best solution so they can overcome the obstacles they may be facing within their career development, business management or personal struggles?


  • Information sources - What are the external influences affecting your buyer? Do they have a preferred blog, social platform or search engine? Who do they aspire to be like, or look up to for knowledge?




BLOG; What does your audience want?


You can then personalise this buyer persona even more to make it unique to your  business needs. For example, if you are technology-based it may be worth considering if your customer is tech-savy. By acknowledging something like this, you can preempt future problems and help them adapt to this. 

You can also achieve this by designing a summary of their lifestyle in a short biography.


Doing this can help you put yourself in the customers shoes to really understand their needs. 



So, what market research is needed to gather some of this data?


Firstly, you can look through your existing customer base to uncover certain trends of who visits your website/buys your product. In other words, who consumes your content? You can do this through surveys, enquiring about their demographic, job role, preferred communication method and general feedback on their experience.


Questions might include:


  • What is your job role?
  • What is your preferred social media platform?
  • What search engine do you most commonly use when finding out information?
  • Is there anything you would do to improve you consumer experience?


Secondly, this data can reveal how many buyer personas your business may be dealing with. You may start to notice patterns which you can use to create multiple personas based off their demographic for example.


Thirdly, existing customer feedback is something already at your fingertips and very useful. Take a look at any reviews left about your product and service and use this to begin making instant changes to your business. Perhaps someone has commented on your pricing strategy; this would make you want to reconsider whether you product is suiting the income needs of your buyer persona.

  • Consistency: By understanding and establishing who your ideal target market it, you can make your whole business is on-brand to suit their needs. Whether this be your website, blog posts, social media platforms, copy, email contents, all need to meet the specific needs of each buyer persona within your company.

     

        It can help to ensure that all your efforts regarding advertising, content creation, campaigns, and targeting are all tailored. You can utlize your time to          create the most effective marketing stategy. 


  • Improved targeting: A buyer persona can help you to create a better product/targeting methods. It allows you to make future changes to increase sales and cater to their needs. In the long run, the better your understanding you have of your buyers, the more your business will expand and grow


  • Rapport: They lead to improve customer-business relations. If you show a geniune interest in achieving what the customer wants, they will keep coming back for more. Establishing this trust and reassurance is key to success
