How to reach your target audience to increase your revenue

Reaching your target audience is extremely important to increase revenue, as a business, you could be constantly advertising your business but just not seeing any results, there could be many reasons for this, one being that you are not advertising to the right audience. 



What is a target audience?


A target audience is a group of people that are most likely going to be interested in your product or service based on various factors including their demographic, job and location. 



When starting a new business or creating a new product or service it is important to know and understand who your target audience is. Understanding your target audience[s] and knowing what they want is extremely important for businesses to make sure that they have success with their marketing, on and off line. 



Example;


A business that sells baby food wouldn’t find it effective to advertise their products in a newspaper aimed at the older generation or on a social media platform like LinkedIn as their target audience won’t generally be looking at these, especially for parenting advice and baby products. 


This type of business would be better advertising on Facebook and Instagram, platforms parents are more likely to be using as they can join groups communities to communicate with other parents in the same situation. 



Why knowing your customer is important


Whilst we are on topic, it is worth noting that paid social advertising can be expensive but if done right it can have a big return on investment. 


Knowing your target market 


Marketing is about knowing and understanding the target audience[s] for your business and what platforms they are most likely to be on.


As a business you need to look at who your current customers are, this will indicate which potential audiences you need to connect with, whether it is other businesses or families, you need to make sure that your advertising is reaching the right audience on right platform. 



Tracking progress 


As a business, you have to make sure that you are tracking the progress of your marketing. If you are constantly posting content and running ad’s but not tracking the performance then you won't know whether your work and investment is impacting your target audience. 


You could be wasting valuable time and money on marketing and advertising to the wrong audience. 


Social media is a great way to reach a large number of people at once, it is also something that will be online for however long you choose to keep it available meaning in 2 years time a potential client could see a post that you made years ago, and if it has been done right, it could make them become one of your most loyal customers.

Which social platform would work best for you? 


There are endless social media platforms out there that can help you reach your desired audience. However, it is worth spending time looking into these platforms to work out which one is worth spending your time, and possibly money on. 


Instagram 


Advantages of Instagram:


  • You can post organic content as often or as little as you like 
  • It’s a great platform to build a following for your brand 
  • Intergrates with Facebook through parent company META to create paid for advertisements 
  • Great for those with product based businesses as they can utalise Instagram Shopping features

Disadvantages of Instagram:


  • Not all B2B companies use Instagram, so if you are targeting B2B businesses think about using other platforms for paid for advertising 
  • Organic posts dont allow ‘clickable’ links in captions 
  • If your brand isn't as visual it can be a hard platform to start with, especially if you are not a marketer 


Facebook


Advantages of Facebook:


  • Paid for advertising can start from £1 a day and can be scaled as and when needed
  • Facebook offers in app insights to help you optimise your marketing 
  • Facebook has nearly 3 billion users - one of the biggest out of all social media platforms

 

Disadvantages of Facebook:


  • Younger audiences dont use facebook as much as other platforms 
  • People dont tend to follow brand pages as much as they used too 
  • People don’t like mixing work and personal life - something to consider if you are advertising and marketing services or products people will use at work. 


Don’t forget - there are so many more platforms like Linkedin, Twitter, TikTok and YouTube that can help you reach your target audience and increase your revenue. Grab a piece of paper and have a brainstorming session - think about the pros and cons of each platform.

Dont forget your website, it is extremely important when advertising on social media to have a website where your current and potential customers can be taken too to learn more about your business whether it is to buy your product, get in touch or book a call.

A buyer persona is a typical representations of the businesses ideal customer, based upon market research as well as looking in-depth at your existing customer base. When creating a buyer persona, it is not as simple as describing who they are, you use it to generate insight’s into their buyer habits and journey which can lead to a progressive sales strategy. This then enables you to refine what type of content you need to create in order to engagement this type of user the most. Ultimately, it can help to build those all important rapports needed between the client and the business; addressing this allows you to personalise the service you provide to them. Building your buyer persona To build you buyer persona, you need to address who you are trying to target. To establish this, you need to ask yourself the following questions: Age/Gender- For example, if you wanted to target Generation Y these group of people are classed as millennials born between 1981-1996. This might affect the language you use in your copywriting and content creation Location - Country or City based? This can reveal more about their personality Status - What is their current role; manager, trainee? What area do they specalise in? Are they affluent? Income - How much are they willing to spend of your products or service? Level of education - This can help again with how you choose to deliver your advertising Personality - are they an introvert or an extrovert? What are their beliefs and vales? Goals - What do they want from you? Professional and personal goals Frustrations and Barriers - How can you offer the best solution so they can overcome the obstacles they may be facing within their career development, business management or personal struggles? Information sources - What are the external influences affecting your buyer? Do they have a preferred blog, social platform or search engine? Who do they aspire to be like, or look up to for knowledge?
